A herpes-like virus causing one of the two kinds of mononu–cleosis (the other is caused by CMV). It lodges in the nose and throat and is transmitted by kissing. EBV lies dormant in the lymph glands and has been associated with Burkitt’s lymphoma, a type of cancer of the lymph glands. While frequently present in persons with AIDS (and others), the connection with the disease is a mystery. However, EBV seems to be the clearest link to date between virus and cancer.
